Buffalo Hump

Fat can develop in nearly any part of the body. One such spot in which excess fat can become a bothersome and embarrassing issue is at the base of the neck and top of the back. This buildup of fat is often referred to as a buffalo hump, for its resemblance of the hump on the back of the animal. This fat develops on the dorsocervical fat pad, which sits at the base of the back of the neck and between the shoulders. Generally caused by obesity or genetics, this fat can also be caused by medical conditions and lifestyle factors such as:

• Poor posture
• Cushing’s syndrome
• Osteoporosis
• Some HIV medications
• Tumor, pituitary, or glandular dysfunction

If you notice fat on this area of your body, we recommend seeing a medical doctor to first check if it’s caused by an underlying medical condition. Once the cause has been determined, you can take steps to address the fat that developed in the hump, which may include liposuction.

Public Mound

As women enter puberty, they develop a small pocket of fat on their mos pubis, which is Latin for pubic mound. This rounded deposit of fatty tissue forms naturally over the pubic bones and varies in size depending on the level of hormones and body fat one has. Generally, once pubic hair grows, this area is covered and becomes less noticeable but for some women the pubic mound can enlarge to a size that is embarrassing, even making it difficult to wear some clothes comfortably.

While this deposit of fat is natural, there are some factors that can lead to the enlargement of this area, including:

• Obesity
• Pregnancy
• Aging

Gynecomastia

Gynecomastia, commonly referred to as man boobs, is a condition in which men experience an enlargement of the breast tissue, giving them the appearance of breasts. This can be an extremely embarrassing condition for men and oftentimes diet and exercise fail to help. At our office, we offer male breast reduction surgery with liposuction to help those affected achieve a more masculine physique.

This condition generally forms from an imbalance in the hormones testosterone and estrogen. If a male produces too much estrogen and too little testosterone the breast tissue may develop as it would in a female.

There can be other reasons this happens to men other than a hormone imbalance, some of them include:

• Certain cancers of the glands
• Certain steroid and anti-depressant medications
• Aging
• Drug or alcohol abuse
• Significant weight gain
